لا ريب أنّ الله وصف نفسه بصفات، وسمّى نفسه بأسماء وأخبر عن نفسه بأفعال. وقد حاولت كل طائفة أن تؤول آيات الصفات بتأويل كل ما يخالف نحلتها وأصلها، فالعيار عندهم فيما يتأول وما لا يتأول هو المذهب الذي ذهبت إليه، وما وافقها أقروه ولم يتأولوه وما خالفها تأولوه. والكتاب الذي بين أيدينا وقع فيه بعض المتأولين في نفي الصفات ووقع الآخر في تعطيلها أو تأويلها بما لا يليق بجلال الله تعالى. وقد كان للإمام القرطبي وهو المفسر العالم قسطاً من هذا التأويل، حيث ذكر في هذا الكتاب من الآي والأحاديث التي جاء فيها من ذكر الصفات رداً على المجسمة وأصحاب التشبيه.
وقد جاء الكتاب محققاً تبع فيه المحقق المنهجية التالية: نسخ المخطوط نسخاً جيداً مع ضبط النص. تصحيح التصحيفات التي وقعت بالمخطوط، نقل الهوامش التي على المخطوط وجعلها في الأصل، تخريج الأحاديث والحكم عليها بالصحة والضعف حسب قواعد التحديث، ترجمة لبعض الأعلام والفرق الزائفة على الطريق السوي، الردّ على المعطلة والمأوّلة من كلام الشيخ ابن قيم الجوزية في كتابه (مختصر الصواعق المرسلة) ترجمة مختصرة للمؤلف الإمام القرطبي.
