قد تكون الآنسة ماربل واحدة من أكثر الشخصيات الخيالية شهرة في التاريخ، فقد قرأ أخبار مغامراتها مئات الملايين من الناس وعرفوا عنها أدق التفاصيل: عن شخصيتها واهتماماتها وعلاقاتها الاجتماعية وطريقة تفكيرها. وغير ذلك مما لا يكاد الناس يعرفون عن كثير من المشاهير الحقيقيين من الناس. ولكنها-بعد-لم تعش في عالم الواقع أبدا ولم تكن سوى "اختراع" أبدعه خيال الكتابة البوليسية أغاثا كريستي التي تعد من أشهر من كتب قصص الجريمة في القرن العشرين وفي سائر العصور. كتبت أغاثا كريستي من روايات وقصص الجريمة سبعا وستين رواية طويلة وعشرات من القصص القصيرة، والمجموعة الموجودة في هذا الكتاب هي من أهم ما صدر لأغاثا بعد وفاتها، وفيها ثماني قصص قصيرة ستة منها من بطولة الآنسة ماربل واثنين لا تظهر فيها، وبالتالي ليستا من بطولتها، بل ولا هما من النوع العادي من قصص وروايات ألغاز الجريمة الذي تكتبه أغاثا ، وإنما من نوع آخر من "الألغاز العربية" مما كتبته في بعض الأحيان ولكنها لم تكثر منه. وبما أن الآنسة ماربل هي بطلة المجموعة الكبرى من القصص ارتأى الناشر إضافة تعريف بالآنسة ماربل وقريتها التي عاشت فيها، والهدف تعريف قراء العربية بهذه الشخصية العجيبة التي أحبوها وتابعوا قصصها من قديم.
تضم هذه المجموعة ست قصص قصيرة من بطولة الآنسة ماربل وقصتين غريبتين لا تظهر الآنسة ماربل فيهما. وقد نُشرت أكثر هذه القصص في الثلاثينيات في بعض المجلات، ولكنها لم تصدر في كتاب إلا بعد وفاة مؤلفتها بثلاث سنوات.
وقد أضفنا إلى الكتاب تعريفاً بالآنسة ماربل وقريتها التي عاشت فيها، وهذا التعريف خاص بالطبعة العربية، قصدنا به تعريف قرائنا بهذه الشخصية العجيبة التي أحبوها وتابعوا قصصها من قديم.
