عرف الإمام زيد بن علي بين معاصريه بأنه من أفصح وأبلغ العرب، حتى كان الناس يجتمعون إليه حين يناظر ويحفظون النادر من الشعر والغريب من الحكم، وشهد له بذلك أهل الاختصاص والبلاغة، فقال الكميت بن زيد الأسدي وهو فحل من فحول الشعراء والفصحاء "ما رأيت قط أبلغ من زيد بن علي"، وقد خلف لنا هذا الإمام تراثاً فكرياً خالداً، رسمه بدمه وخطّه بقلمه، فرسم لنا بدمه طريق الحرية وتحدي الطغاة، وخلف لنا جماعة من التلامذة الأفذاذ الذين انتشروا في أصقاع الأرض يبثون المعارف الدينية. وأورثنا مجموعة من الكتب والرسائل التي تعد من أوائل ما كتب في تاريخ الثقافة الإسلامية، فكانت تلبية لحاجة ماسة للتنوير الإسلامي فيما يتطلبه العصر، ومن ثم اقتصر الكلام في هذه الرسائل على مواضع الحاجة، ولم يتطرق إلى شيء من مواضع الاتفاق، ولا إلى شيء من الفرضيات التي يحتمل وقوعها.
وفي هذا الكتاب يجمع المحقق "محمد يحيى سالم عزان" مختلف ما وقف عليه من رسائل وكتب الإمام زين بن علي وهدفه إبراز أهمية هذه الرسائل والكتب وتحديد التوجه الفكري للإمام زيد. أما التحقيق فتجلى بـ: أولاً: تقطيع النص إلى مباحث وفقرات والفقرات إلى جمل. ثانياً: تخريج الآيات القرآنية وضبطها بالشكل. ثالثاً: تخريج الأحاديث النبوية المحتاجة إلى تخريج، وشرح الغريب من الألفاظ اللغوية. رابعاً: دوّن مقدمة صغيرة لتكون مدخلاً لفهم الرسائل وهدفها.
