يحاول جورجي كنعان في هذا الكتاب العودة إلى المراحل الأولى في حياة الإنسان المشرقي القديم وذلك من خلال قراءة ذكية للتراث الشرقي وذلك بغاية فهم خلاق للماضي في علاقته بالحاضر. ويسعى المؤلف إلى ذلك من خلال رصد مفهوم العالي (إيل-الله) في التاريخ. ولعل من أهم الدواعي والضرورات الي اقتضت دراسة مفهوم الألوهية في الذهن المشرقي القديم بالنسبة للمؤلف، هو أن جماعة بني إسرائيل الذين لم تُعرف لهم جذور في أرض معيّنة، تجمعوا في وقت ما (هو باتفاق المؤرخين القرن العاشر ق.م.) في بعض مرتفعات فلسطين، وأقاموا نوعاً من الكيان المزعزع القلق المفكك المتنازع. وبعدما سباهم البابليون والآشوريون إلى بلاد ما بين النهرين وضع أحبارهم وكهانهم تاريخهم (التوراة) حيث وضعوا فيه على لسان (يهوه) وعده له بإعطائهم أرض فلسطين "ميراثاً أبدياً".
كانت تلك من أحد دوافع جورجي كنعان لهذا البحث، "تاريخ الله" أو "مفهوم الألوهة" وذلك للوقوف على حقيقة هذا التاريخ بعيداً عن أساطير اليهود الذين انتحلوا تراث بابل وكنعان وادعوه تراثاً يهودياً، وأخذوا بلسان أو شفة كنعان وادعوها لغة عبرية، وتبنّوا إله سوريا الطبيعية "إيل" (الله) ودمجوه بإلههم يهوه الذي صار إله الشعوب المؤمنة لشعوب نصف الكرة الغربي. إلى جانب ذلك فإن جورجي كنعان رأى ضرورة هذا البحث وذلك في سبيل استجلاء المفاهيم الأساسية التي تقوم عليها حياتنا، وأهمها مفهوم الحضارة والألوهية، لأن النظر الحضاري الواعي يسوغ آفاقنا ويعمق مداركنا، ولأن مفهوم الألوهية هو أسمى ما وصل إليه وما يمكن أن يصل إليه الذهن الإنساني. ولقد مضى زمن قصير قبل أن يبدأ الذهن السوري القديم، وعلى ضوء أنقى الأذهان البشرية، بافتراض وجود هذا المفهوم الكامل، المجرد عن جميع الغواشي الحسية، ويطلق عليه صفة العالي (عل-إيل-إله-الله).
