موضوع "العالي"-(إيل-الله) غنيّ وفعال. وقد كان له أهمية كبرى في حياة المجتمعات، وأثر بالغ في تاريخ الحضارة الإنسانية، وتاريخ الفكر الديني. وقد عالجه جورجي كنعان في هذا الكتاب الذي جاء تحت عنوانين "تاريخ الله" أو "مفهوم الألوهة" حيث تناوله من جوانب عدة، تاريخية ونيلولوجية وحضارية. عالج في القسم الأول جوانب مشعة من تاريخ الحضارة السورية التي انبعثت عنها مفهوم "العالي"، معتمداً في تصفح هذا التاريخ على الأدلة الأثرية الكثيرة التي عثر عليها علماء الآثار وعلى ما تكشف من نصوص ونقوش وصلت كما حفرها الإنسان الشرقي القديم على ألواح الطين أو نقشها على جدران المعابد وأبواب القصور.
وفي القسم الثاني عالج مفهوم الألوهية من مرحلة وعي "السيّد" "العالي"-(الله) في ذهن الإنسان القديم في سوريا الطبيعية، إلى مرحلة توضح المفهوم في صورة مبدأ من المبادئ الكونية، كانت في أذهانهم من الوضوح بحيث لم يروا ضرورة لشرحها أو تحليلها. ومن الشمول والإحاطة بحيث لا يمكن التعبير عنها.
