يتناول هذا الكتاب عرض أربع قضايا جزائية نظرت فيها المحاكم في فرنسا وألمانيا، وقد أثارت في أيامها دهشة العالم المتحضر واستغرابه، ولم تزل إلى هذه الأيام تلهج بها الألسن، وتكتب عنها الأقلام وتعيد ذكرى بعضها شاشات السينما: قضية "الفرد دريفوس" الجاسوس البريء 1894 قضية "لاندرو" سفاح باريس وساحر النساء 1921، قضية "بيتر كورتن سفاح "دوسلدورف" 1936، قضية هيدلبرج، أو محتال بالتنويم المغنطيسي 1936، ولقد أخذ المؤلف وقائع هذه القضايا من مصادر عدة، فدقق فيها مبدياً رأيه بها، منتقداً حيث وجد ضرورة للانتقاد. من خلال هذه القضايا سيتعرف القارئ إلى أساليب قديمة جديدة في التحقيقات والتحريات، وما ينبغي لها من دقة وصبر وبراعة، كما سيطلع على الكثير من خفايا النفس البشرية وغرائبها.
إن كل قضية في هذا الكتاب هي في الواقع رواية بوليسية مثيرة، ويزيدها إثارة إنها صيغت في أحداث وقعت فعلاً، ولم ينسجها خيال كاتب، وفي الإطلاع على هذا الواقع المثير متعة فكرية كبرى، لا سيما إذا كانت هذه "الروايات البوليسية" قد كتبها كاتبها بلغة حيّه بليغة، فصيحة سهلة، تحبس أنفاس القارئ فيلتهمها وترسخ وقائعها في ذهنه، كأنه عاشها وأصبحت جزءاً منه، ويخيل له وهو يطالع هذه القضايا، أن الكلمات قد تحولت إلى صور، وأن الفقرات قد تحولت إلى مشاهد يراها بأم العين تمر أمامه، وكأنه يحضر فيلماً ممتعاً يثريه تارة، ويؤلمه تارة أخرى، فيضعف حيناً، أو تكاد تسكب الدمع حيناً آخر، أما فائدة هذا الكتاب فسيجدها القاضي والمحامي ورجال الضابطة العدلية المختص في علم النفس.
