هذا كتاب اختار له الباحث عنواناً يمثل فحواه، فقد جمع فيه اختباراته الشخصية في التأليف، وفي التوجيه وقراءاته التربية الواسعة في هذا الموضوع. ويعود اهتمام الباحث به إلى عام 1952م، عندنا اتخذ التدريس رسالة ومهنة، فاهتم بأن يجمع القوانين والمصطلحات التي ارتآها أشهر الباحثين الذين نجحوا في حياتهم العلمية، وأن يشرح الطرق الصحيحة، والتوجيه القويم إلى بالبحث بمفهومه العلمي الحديث.
ويحتوي كتابه هذا الذي ابتع فيه طرائق غربية، على تمهيد وستة فصول، حيث ابتداءً بتعريف البحث وأنواعه وأهدافه ومؤهلات الباحث، ليكون مشغلاً يهتدي به الطالب العربي وكل من يتصدى للبحث عامة من دون أن يخصص في حقل من حقوق المعرفة. ثم تحدث عن الشروط التي تتوافر في اختيار موضوع البحث، وواجبات المشرف والطالب. ووضع خطة للموضوع، وذكر الاستعدادات الأولية التي لا بد منها كالفهرسة ومختصراتها، مقتبسة تارة من البحوث الأجنبية، وتارة أخرى من المكتبات الجامعية، ونخص بالذكر مكتبة الجامعة الأمريكية بيروت، وفي بعض الأحيان يضع مصطلحات ومختصرات تمشياً مع الروح العلمية الحديثة.
وبعد هذا تحدث عن التقميش، وأهمية تدوينه، ثم التأليف، وإخراج البحث، وعرضه عرضاً مكتملاً تاماً، ثم طبعه وتجليده، ومناقشته وإجازته، وفوق كل هذا أراد أن ينبه الطالب العربي إلى ضرورة البحث العلمي في حياته الجامعية، والتسلح بفضائله، لأن البحث في عصرنا هذا جزء مهم من الحياة الثقافية، وسلاح قوي يقتحم به الطالب العربي ماضي أمته ومستقبلها بثورة فكرية متحررة منفتحة، ونهضة مباركة تدفعنا إلى ركب الحضارة الإنسانية العظيم.
رسالة قيّمة وهامة لكل طالب جامعي، حيث ترسم المنهجح العلمي السليم الذي ينتهجه أي باحث ودارس في كتابة البحث العلمي، من ناحية المصادر والتوثيق، والتسلسل في نقاط البحث وكل ما يتعلق بكتابة البحث العلمي.
