في 1990 تم إطلاق وتشغيل هابل تليسكوب الفضاء الذي يسمى "هتف" اختصاراً. ثم تم تجديد هذا التليسكوب الفضائي في ديسمبر 1993. ومنذ ذلك الوقت كشف لنا هذا التليسكوب عن تفاصيل مذهلة مثيرة في كل جرم سلط عليه التليسكوب نظرته الحادة المحدقة. ما هي الاكتشافات التي قام بها "هتف" حتى الآن؟ كيف يعمل هذا التليسكوب بالفعل؟ وما هي مهمة هتف العلمية؟ إن هذا الكتاب السخي بالرسوم التوضيحية هو أول كتاب يجيب عن هذه الأسئلة في عرض كامل للمادة العلمية المثيرة أقصى الإثارة، التي تأتت من بليسكوب القضاء هابل. وبالكتاب مجموعة ممتازة من الصور المثيرة التي التقطها هذا التليسكوب، ويدعمها شرح حيوي مليء بالمعلومات، وإن لم يكن شرحاً تكنيكياً، وإنما هو يشرح لنا ما تخبرنا به هذه الصور عن كوننا المعقد المفعم بالألوان.
يبدأ الكتاب بالتخطيط العام للهدف العلمي من التليسكوب هتف، ليقودنا بعدها خلال مرحلة الانفعال بإطلاقه، والفزع لما حدث عند نشره، وتشغيله ثم الارتياح بعد إعادة إصلاحه. ويلي ذلك شرح واضح دقيق للطريقة التي يصنع بها أرصاده. ليبدأ بعدها استكسافنا لكوننا. ويقدم لنا الكتاب أجراماً مألوفة لنا إلى حد كبير-مثل الكواكب والمجموعات العنقودية للنجوم- ولكن هذا كله بتفصيل لم نره قط من قبل، كما يقدم لنا الكتاب أجراماً عجيبة مثل الثقوب السوداء، والنوى النشطة للمجرات، ونجوم غريبة، ونفاثات ضوئية، وعدسات جذبوية، وكلها أجرام طالما ظلت تروغ من علماء الفلك حتى وقت جد قريب. وحتى يتحول هذا الكتاب إلى مرجع علمي أورد المؤلفان في خاتمته معجماً مطولاً في نهاية الكتاب يشرح الكثير من المفاهيم المستخدمة في المناقشة.
