بغض النظر عن الميدان أو اللغات المعنية، فإن الترجمة تمثل وسيلة للاتصال. ومع ذلك، تنطوي الترجمة في المجال الطبي على ترجمة الوثائق المتعلقة بتطبيقات العقاقير الجديدة، أو الوثائق السريرية أو التقنية أو التنظيمية أو التسويقية ذات الصلة بالمجال الطبي أو الصيدلاني أو الرعاية الصحية. وكما هو الحال مع أي مجال معين، تتطلب الترجمة الطبية تدريب ومعرفة واسعة بالمجال إلى جانب المهارات اللغوية. يتناول هذا الفصل العديد من إجراءات الترجمة والقضايا التي تواجهنا عند ترجمة النصوص الطبية. ومن الجدير بالذكر أن الترجمة الطبية هي مجال ذو أهمية عالية للغاية حيث أن الترجمات الجيدة يمكن أن تكون قادرة على إنقاذ حياة المرضى، في حين أن الترجمات الرديئة قد تعرضهم للخطر (Engels 2011).
وبصرف النظر عن الكفاءة في اللغتين المصدر والهدف، يجب أن يكون للمترجم الطبي الجيد قدرات بحثية ممتازة. ويجب عليه مواكبة أحدث المصطلحات الطبية من خلال مراجعة أحدث الدوريات والمجلات، بالاضافة إلى تصفح الإنترنت. أما الأدوات النموذجية المطلوبة للترجمة الطبية فتشمل أحدث القواميس العلمية والطبية، والكتب، والوصول إلى الإنترنت، وما إلى ذلك.
يجب أن تكون جميع صياغات الوثيقة الطبية باللغة الأصلية المطلوبة. المعيار الموصى به لمستوى اللغة هو من الصف الرابع إلى الصف الثامن. ويجب تفسير أي مصطلح علمي أو قانوني بعبارات بسيطة. يجب أن تكون النسخة الأصلية والمترجمة “متسقتان”، مما يعني أنه يجب الحفاظ على الأسلوب والمحتوى الأصلي. بل يجب الحفاظ حتى على حجم الخط ومعلومات الحواشي السفلية.
يجب أن يكون لدى المترجم الطبي فهم عميق بالتخصص وميل إلى البحث ليتمكن من القيام بترجمة طبية دقيقة. تتمثل احدى المشاكل التي تواجه المترجمين الطبيين في الاستخدام المستمر للاختصارات في مجال الطب. ومما يضيف الصعوبات للمترجم الطبي هي المعاني المتعددة لنفس الاختصار. ويجب على المترجم أن يختار المعنى الصحيح وفقا للسياق.
