طه جابر العلواني (1935 - 4 مارس 2016)، هو مفكر وفقيه إسلامي عراقي. كان رئيس المجلس الفقهي بأمريكا، ورئيس جامعة العلوم الإسلامية والاجتماعية (SISS) بهرندن، فرجنيا، الولايات المتحدة الأمريكية. حصل على الدكتوراة في أصول الفقه من كلية الشريعة والقانون بجامعة الأزهر في القاهرة، مصر، عام 1973. كان أستاذاً في أصول الفقه بجامعة الإمام محمد بن سعود الإسلامية بالرياض، المملكة العربية السعودية منذ عام 1975 حتى 1985. في عام 1981 شارك في تأسيس المعهد العالمي للفكر الإسلامي في الولايات المتحدة، كما كان عضو المجلس التأسيسي لرابطة العالم الإسلامي في مكة المكرمة، وعضو مجمع الفقه الإسلامي الدولي في جدة. هاجر إلى الولايات المتحدة في عام 1983. وكان رئيس جامعة قرطبة الإسلامية في الولايات المتحدة.

في كتابته لسيرته هنا، يجمع الشيخ الدكتور طه جابر العلواني، العالم الأصولي المتضلع بتاريخ الحضارة الإسلاميَّة وعلومها النقلية مع خبرته وعلمه في فن كتابة السير والتراجم الغنيَّة عند المسلمين وفن كتابة السير المتطورة في الغرب حيث عاش شطراً غير يسير من حياته هناك، وهذا يجعل هذه السيرة ذات طابع ونكهة خاصتين وممتعتين ومفيدتين للقراء المهتمين بالسير الذاتيَّة وتاريخ وسياسة العراق في الخمسينيات والستينيات من القرن الماضي، والتي كانت بحق فترة صاخبة ومليئة بالصراعات السيَّاسية والفكريَّة، ولها أثرها في تطور الأحداث في العقود اللاحقة.
يتطرق الكتاب إلى مجموعة من القضايا المهمة ويسلّط الضوء على أحداث كانت غامضة، أو يقدم تصوراً جديداً لمجموعة من الأحداث في تاريخ العراق الحديث، مما يساعد على تقديم تصور آخر لتلك الأحداث في الأجواء الأكاديمية.
إذ يتعرض الدكتور طه مثلاً، بإسهاب بالغ، إلى ظروف نشأة الحزب الإسلامي العراقي في بداية الستينيات، والمحاولة الإنقلابية في 20 كانون الثاني عام 1970، حيث كان طرفاً رئيسياً مع عبد الغني الراوي والإيرانيين ودول عربيَّة وخارجيَّة في تلك المحاولة.
وشهادته هنا على صراع البعثّيين والناصريين والإسلاميين في الخمسينيات والستينيات شهادة رجل عاصر الأحداث وكان ضمن اللاعبين الأساسيين والمؤثرين فيها أو الحلقات القريبة منهم.
