أسهمت أولى السير التي نشرت عن جبران، في اضطراب صورته عند قارئه وفي إلقاء الشوك حول توافق أفكاره مع سلوكه اليومي. فقد جُعل من جبران رجلاً مادياً يحاول التقرب من الناس ويفتش عن المدائح بأي ثمن، أو صوّر على أنه قديس ناسك تحيط برأسه هالات النور، في حين جعل البعض من قصر قامته مدخلاً لتولد شعوره بالنقص والدونية.
لقد روّج الدارسون حول حياته مجموعة من الأقاصيص والحكايات، لو أخذ بها لحق التساؤل عمّا إذا كان من ثبات في معارفنا عنه. ومما يزيد من التشويش والتعمية أنه شارك هو ذاته في تغذية الصورة الأسطورية عن أصل أسرته وظروف نشأته وردود الحكام والكنيسة في الشرق على كتبه. لاستفاد مما سبق قوله أن هذه الدراسة التي نقلب صفحاتها تورد تصحيح أو إعادة رسم صورة جبران الحقيقة، كما يمكن أن تركّب انطلاقاً من رسومه ورسائله وكتبه. ليس من أهداف هذه الدراسة نقد الأبحاث والكتب التي صدرت عن جبران أو تأسيس معرفة "جديدة" عن شخصية جبران أو فكره.
ونتيجة القول هذه الدراسة لا تهدف إلى "كل القول" أو قول "كل شيء" ولا تدعي أنها ستقدم للقارئ جبراناً آخر كان مسجوناً. إنما تهدف فقط إلى الكشف عن العلاقة الجدلية القائمة بين الحب والموت في سيكولوجية جبران وفي بنيته الفكرية. ففي الوقت الذي اتفق جميع الباحثين على دور المرأة في حياة جبران ونتاجه الفكري ورسومه، كما اتفقوا على أهمية الموت وتأثيره في سلوك جبران وتكوّن أفكاره اختلف الدارسون بالمقابل حول دور الحب وأهميته وتأثيره في حياة جبران ونادراً ما أشاروا إلى جدلية العلاقة بين الحب والموت في تكوّن نظرته إلى الوجود، وتحديداً نظرية الاستمرار بعد الموت وفكرة العودة والتقمص.
