قصة رحلة الطيور إلى جبل قاف مستوحاة من المنظومة الشعرية "منطق الطير" للشاعر الفارسي الصوفي فريد الدين العطار الذي عاش في نيشابور في إيران مطلع القرن الثاني عشر م.
يسرد العطار في منظومته أن طيور العالم قد اجتمعت لإنتخاب ملك لها، وقد أخبرها الهدهد المعروف بخبرته وحكمته أن هناك ملكاً هو الطير العنقاء المقيم في جبل قاف، ولكن الطريق إليه عبر وديان سبعة محفوفة بالأخطار، فأخذ كل طير يتذرّع بأعذار لعدم القيام بالرحلة.
فالبلبل لا يمكنه أن يترك محبوبته الوردة الحمراء، والببغاء مقتنعة برفاهية قفصها الذهبي، والبطة لا تريد أن تغادر مواطن الماء... فكان دور الهدهد أن يفند تلك الذرائع والحجج التي تكشف لهم زيف أعذارهم ويقنعهم بإنجاز الرحلة رغم أخطار الطريق.
ويكمن جمال القصة الصوفية في عرض فلسفة أخلاقية تدعو إلى التحلي بالفضائل كالصبر والمحبة والإرتقاء بالنفس إلى ما فوق الماديات، والتخلّي عن الصفات السلبية كالغرور والأنانية والتملق، وذلك من خلال تصوير مسرحي رائع على لسان الطيور التي يرمز كل منها إلى طراز من الناس بطباعه وخصائصه.
والعطار قد استوحى اسم منظومته الشعرية من القرآن الكريم في سورة "النمل" التي تذكر قصة النبي سليمان وحديثه مع الطير "وورث سليمان داود وقال يا أيها الناس عُلمنا منطق الطير وأوتينا من كل شيء إن هذا لهو الفضل المبين.
وتشير الآيات الكريمة إلى مكانة الهدهد كحامل رسالة من النبي سليمان إلى ملكة سبأ يدعوها إلىل عبادة الله تعالى، قال تعالى: ﴿اذْهَبْ بِكِتَابِي هَذَا فَأَلْقِهِ إِلَيْهِمْ ثُمَّ تَوَلَّ عَنْهُمْ فَانْظُرْ مَاذَا يَرْجِعُونَ﴾. [سورة النمل: آية: 28].
اجتمعت الطيور ذات يوم في يستان وقالت: نحن نعيش في زمن وأوان، تسود فيه الفوضى، والظلم والطغيان لا يخلو قوم من حاكم، أو ملك، أو سلطان يحكم بالعدل والحكمة والإحسان، فلا بد أن نبحث لنا عن قائد، عظيم الشان يدير شؤوننا ويقودنا إلى شاطئ البر الأمان.
