كثيرًا ما تبدو بعض القصص الواقعية وكأنها أقدر على منافسة أكثر القصص إيغالًا في الخيال واشتطاطًا فيه. وهذه القصص الواقعية التي يضمها هذا الكتاب هي من هذا القبيل. فإنها لغرابتها وغرابة أحداثها ووقائعها تكاد تند عن التصديق وتتأبى على المعقول، ولكنها في الحقيقة هي الصدق بعينه ومعظم أبطالها موجودون بيننا، نحادثهم ويحادثوننا، ونستمع إليهم ويستمعون لنا؛ إنهم شخصيات إنسانية شابة خفيضة العيش وافرة الراحة ناعمة البال عزيزة الجانب، فإذا بها تدير ظهرها لكل ذلك وتختار عليه الاغتراب في عوالم مجهولة، فتقطع المسافات وترتاد الأقطار والقارات، فتفنى وتتعب وتكابد القر والحر، وتعاني في بعض البلاد النائية درجات حرارة تنخفض ما دون الصفر، وفي أخرى درجات حرارة عالية فوق المعقول.
فهذه القصص بواقعيتها وبما تهدف إليه من حيث كونها تقدم للقارئ نماذج لأبطال يحتذى بهم، ويقتدى بسيرتهم لا تجد نفسها ملزمة بمراعاة الأدوات الفنية المطلوبة في أبنية القصص التي تقرأ لمجرد المتعة وإزجاء الفراغ.
ويحسن أن ننبه إلى أن هذه القصص سبق وأن نشرت على صفحات مجلة حراء في أعداد مختلفة، فوجدنا جمعها في هذا الكتاب إتمامًا للفائدة.
