"صراع بين الحياة والموت، صراع بين البقاء والفناء، وبين العزة والذلة، صراع بين كل الأشياء حتى بين العلماء". آخر كلمات كتبها علاء في مذكراته بعد أن أجهده الفكر وأعياه التعب.
ترك الكتابة، ودفتر مذكراته، وأوراقه المبعثرة على طاولته الصغيرة، ترك كل شيء واتجه إلى سريره فارتمى في أحضانه بكل ثقله مخلفاً كل المشاكل والقضايا خلف ظهره. وما إن استقر في سريره حتى غالبه النوم وغرق في عالم الأحلام مودعاً هذه الدنيا، وكل ما فيها من حلوها ومرها. وما أفاقه من نومه إلا طرقات على باب غرفته، وصوت يداعب مسامعه، ويناديه مشبعاً بالرقة والرأفة والنعومة: علاء... علاء.. قم فقد حان وقت الصلاة.
فتح عينيه بتثاقل، فإذا بوجه مشرق مشرب بالبياض والحمرة، تعلوه البسمة والبشاشة تنسيه كل الهموم والغموم والمتاعب التي واجهته في أمسه، إنها أمة (أيما). خاطبته من أخرى: أعطني يديك يا ولدي حتى أساعدك على النهوص والقيام.
أعطاها يده، أمسكتها بلطافة، وأقامته من فراشه، سلمت له منشفته ليغسل وجهه، ويتهيأ للصلاة، صلى صلاة الصبح وأخذ يقرأ دعاء لصباح لأمير المؤمنين إلى أن وصل إلى قوله (إلهي إن لم تبتدئني الرحمة منك بحسن التوفيق، فمن السالك بي إليك في واضح الطريق، وإن أسلمتني أناتك لقائد "الأمل" والمنى، فمن المقيل عثراتي من كبوات الهوى، وإن خدلني نصرك عند محاربة النفس والشيطان فقد وكلني خذلانك إلى حيث النصب والحرمان...".
وحينما وصل إلى هذه الفقرة، أخذ يكررها ودموعه تجري من عينه، وفكره يسبح في هذا العالم المليء بالتناقض والتضاد. كيف يتم التخلص والنجاة من هذه المشاكل إذا لم يكن التوفيق منك يا رب؟؟
