يتعامل هذا الكتاب مع النصَ الشعريَ باعتباره بناءً من القيم يشيَد بواسطة اللغة، ويعكف على نصوص محمود درويش الشعريَة بهدف سبر التحولات التي شهدتها تجربته الشعريَة –من أول ما كتب وحتَى آخر قصيدة ألقاها قبيل رحيله- وهي تحولات تنطوي على معادلات فنية وفلسفية تدلَ على تغير واتساع: مفهوم الحريَة، ونظام الخيال، ونظام اللغة، ونظام الواقع، ونظام التوصيل.
ويقف عند نصوص متعيَنة، ليستخلص الرؤية لماهيَة الشعر، وللعلاقة بين الشعر والحريَة، والشعر الآيديولوجيا، والشعر والزمان والمكان، والشعر والتاريخ، والشعر والتلقي، والشعر واللغة، ويؤكد "التباين" أن التحوَل في شعر درويش لا يعني "التراجع" أو "التعالي على تحديات الزمان والمكان" وإنَما يعني "التباين" في كيفية رؤية الإرادة الإنسانية وهي تعمل ضد الفوضى والإرتباك والقهر، وفي تصوير الفعل البشري أو النشاط الإنساني في تنوعه وغرابته وتعقدَه.
وسيجد القارئ أن فصول الكتاب –مجتمعة- ستسهم في إلقاء أضواء جديدة على كثير من الظواهر الفنيَة في شعر درويش، وفي إرساء أسس من شأنها تهيئة الأجواء لقراءة نصوصه الشعريَة قراءة موضوعيَة ومنصفة.
