"لماذا لم تستخدم ما نسبته 20% من المسموح لك في قتل المساجين؟"، هكذا يؤنب ضابط المخابرات الكبير آمر السجن الصحراوي، بعد شيوع الخبر عن مظاهرات عمت السجن قام بها السجناء السياسيون، بينما لم يفعلوا في الواقع سوى إطلاق صوت يقلد طنين الذباب في نوبة غريبة إثر إطلاق أحدهم لهذا الصوت، مدعيا أنه ذبابة. يجادل آمر السجن الضابط بأنه أدى واجبه على أتم وجه، وقتل النسبة المسموح له بها، ويقدم العريف المقرب منه لوائح سريعة بأسماء القتلى ليثبت براءة آمره من التخاذل؛ هي لوائح ليس مهما إن كانت وهمية بما أن القتل في هذا المكان شأن يومي من دون اعتبار لنسبته من عدد السجناء الذين لا يعلم أحد عددهم الحقيقي.
عبر صفحات هذه الرواية يقتحم نبيل الملحم عالم السجون السوري بجرأة لامتناهية، ليكتب عن وطن ينزف دما، وكواليس المعتقلات، وابتداع الجلادين في فنون التعذيب وأيديولوجيا الحزب الحاكم وعلاقته بالشعب عبر شخصيات إنتهازية، الغاية لديها تبرر الوسيلة ....
