هذا الكتاب هو السابع في سلسلة الكتاب الطبي الجامعي، وهي سلسلة أعدها البرنامج العربي لمنظمة الصحة العالمية، في المكتب الإقليمي لشرق المتوسط، لتكون مرجعاً لطلاب كليات الطب والعلوم الصحية في البلدان العربية، ينهلون منه في دراستهم لبعض المواد الوثيقة الصلة بمجتمعهم، والتي لا تكتمل الفائدة منها إلا بدراستها وتطبيقها باللغة العربية، فصدر في هذه السلسلة أول ما صدر كتاب الطب الشرعي عام ثلاثة وتسعين، ثم تلاه كتاب طب المجتمع وكتاب الطب النفسي وكتاب الغذاء والتغذية، وهذه الكتب جميعها أعدت وفق منهجية واحدة، إذ شارك في تأليفها وتحريرها أساتذة من كليات الطب في البلدان العربية، مما أضفى عليها الطابع الإقليمي، ثم صدر كتابان آخران هما كتاب المرجع في الفيزيولوجيا الطبية "غايتون وهيل" الذي نقله للعربية الأستاذ الدكتور صادق الهلالي، وكاتب أساسيات الإحصاء الطبي الذي نقله إلى العربية الأستاذ الدكتور عصمت حمود.
والحديث عن تاريخ الطب ومدى إسهام الأطباء والعلماء العرب والمسلمين في مسيرته على درجة بالغة الأهمية، ولا سيما ما أضافوه من إكتشافات وما أضافوا عليه من سمات إنسانية، فسحت فرصة الإستفادة من الخدمات الصحية للفقراء والعجزة والمعوقين، حتى حسدهم عليها الأغنياء والمتعافون، وعاملت ذوي الحاجة من عابري السبيل والمهاجرين واللاجئين معاملةً لا تقل عن أقرانهم من السكان الأصليين، واعتمد الأطباء العرب لأول مرة في تاريخ العلوم على التجريب والإستناد إلى البيئات والبراهين قبل تعميم طرق المعالجة والإعتراف بجدواها.
