منذ وصولي الى بغداد في شباط 1873، أثارت اهتمامي طائفة الصابئة، كنت بالكاد قد سمعت عنها قبل وصولي الى هذه المدينة، ومنذ استقراري لا أني أبحث بعناية عن الديانة الحقيقية لهذه الطائفة المجهولة، حيث يبذلون جهداً في إخفاء، ليس فقط - الأصول الحقيقية لديانتهم - ولكن أيضاً آدابهم، وأعرافهم، وأسلوب عيشهم.
لوقت طويل ذهبت جهودي سدى، مع أن بلاد الصابئة لم تكن تبعد كثيراً عن بغداد. السر العميق الذي تحتفظ به هذه الطائفة، كان دائماً السبب الرئيس في إحجام الأوروبيين عن زيارة بلادهم، أتحدث عن الأوروبيين، أما المحليون، فلم ينم الى حد علمي أن أحدهم قد اهتم بهذه القضية، مع أن بعضهم قد أمضى سنوات طويلة في بلاد الصابئة، إلا أنهم لم يكونوا قادرين حتى على الإجابة عن سؤالي البسيط: هل يمتلك الصابئة دور عبادة أم لا؟!
لقد تعلمت إذن، الكتابة والقراءة بلغة الصابئة، لكي أستطيع أن أنسخ بنفسي، في مفكرتي، المقاطع الأصلية والصيغ التي تحمل الكثير من الأهمية، وهدفي من هذا أن أضمن أكبر قدر من الدقة والمطابقة لنسختي مع الأصل المتاح من كتب الصابئة. بهذه الطريقة استطعت أن أنجز هذا العمل.
