كيف يسعنا تحديد معالم "الإسلام التجديدي"، هذا الإسلام الناشئ منذ مدة والذي بات يفرض نفسه على ساحة الفكر الإسلامي يوماً بعد يوم؟ ما خصائصه الرئيسية؟ وبماذا يمتاز عن "الإسلام الإصلاحي" الذي عرفته تلك الساحة قبل أكثر من قرن من الزمن؟ وما المقصود بالتجديد هنا على وجه الدقة: هل هو إصلاح لقديم أم قطع معه؟ وهل هو استحداث لمرجعيات جديدة أم رتق وترميم لما كان قائماً من نصوص؟
هذه فقط بعض الأسئلة المتعلقة بماهية التجديد، وهي غير منفصلة قطعاً عن سؤال التراث والحداثة الكبير الذي شغل المفكرين طوال الربع الأخير من القرن العشرين. الكتاب الحالي محاولة لتقديم "إسلام المجددين" هذا، وفيه يبدو إسلاماً متعدداً، متنوعاً وغنياً، إسلاماً متحركاً ومربكاً، يحمل قارئه قسراً على مغادرة اطمئنانه ويقينه. قد لا يفصح عن تيار ذي أغلبية جماهيرية أو يحظى برضة المؤستين السياسية والدينية، ولكنه قطعاً إسلام مجاف لروح الثبات والاطمئنان، تلك التي ظلت تغذيها المؤسسة الدينية بحجة الوفاء لإرث السلف الصالح وانسداد باب الاجتهاد. ومع ذلك فإن "إسلام المجددين" أبعد ما يكون عن التوظيف الإيديولوجي المتخفى خلف التلاعب بالنصوص والضمائر المؤمنة، وركيزته الأولى هي رصد العلاقات الاجتماعية والسياسية والتبصر بالعوائق التي تمنع المجتمع من تحقيق حداثته.
