تشكل اسطورة إنانا/ عشتار رمزاً دينياً وفكرياً حيوياً في الفكر العراقي القديم. وقد خضع هذا الرمز لتحليلات مهمة، مضافاً إليه صفات جديدة، كانعكاس للضرورات في المراحل الاجتماعية والسياسية والدينية في العراق القديم.
وفي هذا الكتاب، يعمد "ناجح العموري" إلى تقديم قراءة جديدة في أسطورة (انانا جلجامش وشجرة الخالوب) من حيث المنهج والرؤية، حيث الاعتماد على تقشير الاسطورة، ونزع طبقاتها المتراكمة، ودراسة كل طبقة ومستواها بشكل خاص ومتصل مع الذين سبقه والذي بعده، في محاولة للإستفادة من بعض النظم الثقافية المتجاورة والمتحاورة مع بعضها، أضاء من خلالها على جوانب عديدة، ولا سيما ما له علاقة بالشيطانة ليليث، حيث اقتضى البحث ملاحقتها في الديانة الصائبية المندائية والعبرانية.
تحكى أسطورة انانا وشجرة الخالوب: أن الآلهة رأت ذات يوم أن ريحاً عاتية كانت تعصف بشجرة تنبت على ضفة نهر الفرات، فأشفقت عليها ولذلك نقلتها إلى الوركاء حيث زرعتها مجدداً في بستانها المقدس على امل أن تصنع من خشبها عرشاً وسريراً، ولم تستطع الآلهة إنانا قطعها بعدما كبرت، لأنها وجدت الحية قد اتخذت من اسفلها مخبأ وأن الطائر (المدكور) قد بنى له عشاً وأن العفريتة (ليليث) استقرت في وسط جذعها. ولما سمع (أوتو) إله الشمس بكاء أخته، طلب الملك بلجامش لنجدتها وهرع متسلحاً بدرعه السميك وفاسه الثقيلة، ونجح في قتل الحية، وفر الطائر إلى الجبل وهربت ليليث إلى الخرائب.
وأخيراً قطع جلجامش الشجرة وجاءتها هدية إلى الآلهة إنانا/ عشتار لتصنع منها عرشاً وسريراً.
وعلى هذا نجح "العموري" في تقشير هذه الأسطورة وتقديم قراءة معمقة لها، وذلك بالكشف عن مستوياتها الداخلية، ومعرفة آلية العلاقة بين الشخوص، وتجاوز النبى الذهبية واختلافها مع بعضها، وبهذا تكون القراءة قد مارست دورها التأويلي عند تقشير النص والكشف عن مستوياته بعناية قل مثيلها بين الدراسات التي تناولت هذه الملحمة الخالدة.
