إن كتب السؤالات ليست الفائدة منها منحصرة في بيان مراتب الرواة وأحوالهم من حيث التعديل والتجريح فحسب، بل هي أوعية أو خزانة للمعلومات في فروع هذا العلم المختلفة تحتوي خلاصة فكر وحصيلة رحلات وطول ممارسةٍ لكبار أئمة العلم.
لذا، فهي الميدان الذي بَيْنَ عن طريق العلماء الضوابط العلمية لنقد السنة بما لا تجده في كتب الجرح والتعديل المعتادة، ففيها بيان كيفية ممارسة نقد متون السنة، والتطبيق الأمثل للقواعد والضوابط المقررة في ذلك، وتحرير سماعات الرواة بعضهم من بعض نفياً أو إثباتاً.
