الكنيسة المسيحية جمعية بشرية أسسها يسوع المسيح، كما يرى المؤلف وهي تتألف من أناس متحدين مع بعضهم بإيمان واحد به. وقد ظهرت في وقت محدّد ووجدت في مدى قرون كثيرة مع استمرار تعاقب أعضائها ذوي التأثير المختلف على سير وتطور حياتها ولا تزال موجودة إلى وقتنا الحاضر. وتاريخها يشمل تاريخ كل التقلبات والحوادث التي مرت عليها منذ تأسيسها حتى الوقت الحاضر. وقد صادفت الكنيسة منذ ظهورها مقاومة شديدة ضد انتشارها من قبل الجمعيات البشرية المعاصرة. وقد عملت أحوال الشعوب السياسية والدينية قبل زمن المسيحية على تنبيه الناس وحثّهم على معرفة الدين الحقيقي وكان هذا من الأسباب التي أدّت إلى انتشار الكنيسة. والمؤلف أفغراف سميرنوف يعرض لتاريخ الكنيسة المسيحية عبر فتراتها المتعاقبة فيقدم بذلك بتعريف للكنيسة ونشأتها لينطلق في الحديث عن تعاليم الكنيسة والكتابات اللاهوتية والهرطقات والشيع وتنظيم الكنيسة وإدارتها، والخدمة الإلهية والترتيب والحياة المسيحية. إذ كان للكنيسة منذ بدء وجودها خدمة إلهية خاصة ثبت المسيح أشكالها الأساسية والخدمة المسيحية تتميّز تماماً عن العبادة اليهودية وعن جميع الطقوس الوثنية.
كما يعرض المؤلف لحالة الكنيسة الخارجية وخاصة في عهد قسطنطين الكبير وأولاده وفي زمن يوليان المرتد وعلى عهد الأباطرة بعد يوليان ثم يعرض لتعليم الكنيسة الذي تحدد وتثبت في المجامع المسكونية والمكانية بسبب الهرطقات المختلفة. وأخيراً يتناول المعارف الروحية وعلم اللاهوت بالشرح والتفصيل، وانفصال الكنيسة الغربية عن الاتحاد بالشرقية والرئاسة والإدارة الكنسية وحالة التثقيف الروحي والمعاهد العلمية الروحية في الكنيسة اليونانية الشرقية ومحاولات اللاتين للاستيلاء على الأماكن المقدسة في فلسطين.
