إن تاريخ المسيحية القديم فى مصرهو قصة من الإثارة الفكرية والمغامرة الروحية، التى تتخللها قصص من المأساة الشخصية وحتى من الصراع السياسى والعسكرى أحياناً. ورغم أن هناك العديد من المداخل الممكنة إلى الموضوع، فإن العمل الحالى يُركز بشكل أساسى على ظهور شكل من أشكال المسيحية الوطنية فى مصر، بالقوة والضعف التى يُظهرها مثل ذلك التطور فى العصور القديمة والحديثة على السواء. ولكن كان إن تاريخ المسيحية القديم فى مصرهو قصة من الإثارة الفكرية والمغامرة الروحية، التى تتخللها قصص من المأساة الشخصية وحتى من الصراع السياسى والعسكرى أحياناً. ورغم أن هناك العديد من المداخل الممكنة إلى الموضوع، فإن العمل الحالى يُركز بشكل أساسى على ظهور شكل من أشكال المسيحية الوطنية فى مصر، بالقوة والضعف التى يُظهرها مثل ذلك التطور فى العصور القديمة والحديثة على السواء. ولكن كان يجب التطرق إلى بعض أوجه القصة ألأخرى أيضاً، مثل تطور الفكر المسيحى والتنظيم الكنسى فى مصر، وتاريخ مدرسة الإسكندرية فى الفلسفة المسيحية والمؤسسة الرهبانية، التى تعتبر أعظم مساهمات مصر فى العالم المسيحى الأكبر، وعلاقة الكنيسة المصرية بحياة مصر اليونانية الرومانية بشكل عام. وقد بُذل هنا مجهود لإستخدام ، ومن أجل تاريخ الكنيسة ، المصادر الوثائقية التى منحتنا إياها مصر بوفرة، بالإضافة إلى المصادر الأدبية العادية. إن الإهتمام الرئيسى لهذا الكتاب هو أيام مجد بطريركية الإسكندرية، أى الفترة من مجمع نيقية سنة 325م، إلى الغزو العربى سنة 641م. وبطبيعة الحال فإن التاريخ المبكر لكنيسة الإسكندرية يُمثل ، وبالضرورة ، مدخلاً للموضوع، كما أن قصة المسيحية المصرية بعد ذلك التاريخ تُمثل خاتمة طبيعية.
