وكم تساءل في سرّه: ""هل يمكن أن يكون ذلك الرجل عادياً، ينام ويستيقظ ويلتهم وجبته ساخنة؟ هل يزيل عرقه بخنصره ويقذفه بعيداً؟ أيفرغ معدته ويدفن مخلفاته اللزجة أسفل حجر أو كوم رمل كما تفعلها القطط؟ هل يعتمر قبعته ويتدلى كفاه من عصاه الملساء الغليظة كذيل الحصان؟ أتُعجبهُ إحدى النساء؟ أو يثور لأجل الماء وسُقيا أبقاره كأهل القرية إن منع أحدهم الماء؟ لا يبدو ذلك، فهو كائن مُختلف عنّا تماماً، إنه وحش كئيب في انتظار قيامة هائلة، يترك حبله في جوف قاربه ليرتكب أفظع الشنائع وأقذع المنكرات. إنه خنزير وحشي يمقت الله في خلقه وفي ذاته. هو نصف شيطان رغم أن مظهره لا يوحي بذلك، سأجد دليلاً على شكوكي مهما كلّف الأمر"". هناك حديثٌ تناقله الأفندية عن الرجل، زاعمين أنه يهودي، وأن أجداده هم السبط الثاني عشر، والذي هاجر جنوباً نحو الجبل المقدس. والرجل الكبير في نظر الأهالي كان طيباً وحكيماً يضحي لأجلهم، خصوصاً وأنه قد أقدم على توسعة المدرسة، كما وعد بإحضار مدرّسين مختصين ليعلّموا الأطفال الحرف المختلفة."
