يحاول المؤلف، من خلال هذه الدراسة التي أتت في هذا الكتاب، أن يتعامل مع التراث النقدي والبلاغي على أساس في النظر إلى علاقته المتفاعلة بغيره من العلوم والمعارف التي ساهمت في إثرائه أو توجيه مسار قضاياه الأساسية المرتبطة بمبحث الصورة مثل الفلسفة، وعلم الكلام، واللغة والتفسير. ولقد حاول أن ينظر إلى التراث من خلال فهم معاصر للصورة الفنية حيث وضع نصب عينيه أنه يتعامل مع تراث له ظروفه وطبيعته الخاصة، لذا كان لا بد له من البحث عن جوانب الأصالة والزيف فيه سواء بسواء، غاية المؤلف من وراء ذلك أن تأتي هذه الدراسة موضوعية يحكي على ضوءها اتحاد موقف نقدي على ضوء فهم يؤدي إلى موقف واضح من التراث العربي ليكون هذا التراث متفاعلاً مع الحاضر، لا مجرد صفحات موجودة في كتب مطبوعة أو مخطوطة، يُكتفى بالإشارة إليها.
