ترى الناس يتكلمون عن السعادة يتمنونها بعضهم لبعض في الأعياد الشخصية وفي موسم الزفاف، وعند الوداع، وفي أول يوم من العام الجديد، ويذكرونها للقارئ والمشاهد والسامع والمستهلك في تلك الروايات الكثيرة التي لا عدّ لها التي تعرضها صناعة الترفيه وتروي فيها قصة السعادة المهددة والمعرضة للحسد التي يتم في النهاية الحصول عليها. وتنادي بالسعادة تلك الأناشيد التي لا تدع للرجل مجالاً للشك في وسيلة الحصول على السعادة.
وهناك العبارة القديمة التي تتحدث عن "أشد سعادة ممكنة لأكبر عدد ممكن". وهناك المبدأ القائل بأن لكل إنسان له الحق في الحصول على السعادة: من تفكر في ما يعنيه الناس بهذه الأماني وتنبه لهذه الشؤون كلها، قد يصطدم بمفاجأة جذرية عندما يسمع العبارة الجازمة بأن أقصى سعادة الإنسان كامنة في التأمل. وهذه العبارة هي الضبط وهي وحدها موضوع المحاولة التفسيرية في الصفحات التالية التي تنطوي على نظرة إلى العالم كاملة، ولا سيما ذلك الرأي النافذ إلى الجذور حول طبيعة الإنسان ومعنى الوجود الإنساني.
