يمثل الموت حقيقة ثابتة في الوجود الإنساني. فهو النهاية المحتومة التي سعى الإنسان بطرق شتى إلى السيطرة والتقليص من حدة أثرها، فجعل الموت متعدداً لا واحداً انطلاقاً من التصور الذي يحمله الفرد والمجموعة التي ينتمي إليها لما بعد الموت. وهذا التصور مرتبط أساساً بالمعتقد الديني.
فأي مكانة للشهادة في القرآن وفي الحديث والنصوص الحاقة بهما؟ وهل يعتبر كل من مات في حرب ضد غير المسلمين شهيداً؟ وما الجزاء الذي ينتظر الشهيد؟ وهل إن هذا الجزاء هو ذاته من المصادر أم إن المخيال قد لعب دوره في النصوص الثواني ليرسم صورة نموذجية للشهيد تكسبها قداسة في أذهان المتلقين؟ كل هذا إذن حفزنا على البحث في "صورة الشهيد في تفسير الطبري".
