يعنّ للقارئ أن يتساءل عن جدوى دراسة الجواري والغلمان في الثّقافة الإسلاميّة في القرن الحادي والعشرين؛ فنحن في عصر تجاوزت فيه البشريّة قرار إلغاء العبوديّة، لتناقش إشكاليّات أخطر وأهمّ. فما قيمة الحديث عن الجواري والغلمان في زمن العولمة وما تطرحه من جدليّات الهويّة والخصوصيّة والانفتاح على الغير؟ وأيّ مكان للعبيد بين مشاكل المهمّشين وقضايا المرأة وغيرها من البحوث التي تبدو أجدر بالدّراسة الأكاديميّة؟
وهي تساؤلات مشروعة في عصر تفاقمت فيه الهوّة بين عالم متقدّم منتج وعالم يلتمس طرائق النّموّ، لينتج ويدرس القضايا التي تعوقه عن اللحاق بالرّكب ليبدع. لكنّ المطّلع على ما زخرت به الثّقافة العربيّة الإسلاميّة من آثار، يتبيّن أنّ في "عالم الجواري والغلمان" ما يختزل جلّ القضايا "المعاصرة".
فقد حبّر علماء الاجتماع دراسات عديدة عن المغتربين الّذين فقدوا علاقاتهم بأوطانهم الأصليّة، ولم يقدروا على الاندماج كليّاً في مجتمعات الإقامة. ونحن نحلّل في أطروحتنا وضعيّات عبيد أُخرِجوا من محيطهم الأصليّ، لينتقلوا إلى بيئة أخرى مباينة أشدّ التّباين، وجلبوا بعض عاداتهم ومزجوها بعادات بلد الإقامة فأَثْرَوْها، وهذا ما أفقدهم الكثير من خصوصيّاتهم لينصهروا في المجتمع الجديد، بعدما أثّروا فيه وتأثّروا به. ولئن كانت مشاكل المهمّشين من المواضيع المهمّة الّتي يتدارسها باحثو علم الاجتماع، فإنّ عالم الجواري والغلمان قد قام على أقليّات عرقيّة وإثنيّة شاركت في الحياة الاجتماعيّة والاقتصاديّة والسّياسيّة. لقد مكّنتنا دراسة مختلف أوجه حضور الجواري والغلمان في الثّقافة الإسلاميّة، باعتماد "المقاربة الجندريّة" إلى حدّ كبير، من تبيّن الآليّات الّتي تمّ بواسطتها تحويل ما هو بيولوجيّ طبيعيّ إلى ما هو ثقافيّ، واستطعنا أن نتبيّن أيضاً، الدّوافع الخفيّة الكامنة وراء مساهمة الجواري والغلمان في مختلف مجالات الحياة في الثّقافة العربيّة الإسلاميّة.
