إن إنجازات العلماء العرب المسلمين في علوم الحياة الحيوانية أبعد من أن تحصى وأبهر من أن تبارى وأبهى من أن تفاضل، وأنه والحق يقال لا يعلو فوق مساهمات هؤلاء العلماء المبدعين أية مساهمات أخرى في أي عصر من العصور الغابرة ولا تجاربها بذلك أية حضارة من الحضارات البشرية السابقة.
بل إن الإبداع العلمي للعرب المسلمين في مجال علوم الحياة الحيوانية قد فاق كل تصور أو أي إدراك؛ إذ إن كثيراً من الإبتكارات والإكتشافات العلمية والنظريات والفرضيات التي تسبر أغوار هذه العلوم وتجلو غوامضها وتظهر حقائقها قد وضعها العلماء العرب المسلمون في أسفارهم العلمية الرائعة وموسوعاتهم الشاملة المعمقة.
ومن المعلوم لدى المهتمين في تراثنا العلمي العربي أن هنالك الكثير من المصادر والمراجع التراثية الرصينة التي نعثر فيها على نتفٍ متنوعة من مواضيع علوم الحياة الحيوانية، ولقد حاولنا جمع أكبر عدد ممكن من هذه المصادر المتاحة في الوقت الحاضر.
ولذلك فقد مرّ هذا الكتاب بعدة مراحل حتى ظهر بهذا الشكل، فقد كانت البداية جمع ما تناثر من أفكار وخبرات وتجارب وحقائق علمية وضعتها ثلّة جليلة من العلماء المبرزين ضمن طيات الكتب وبين الأسطر وفي زوايا الفقرات والفصول، ثم كانت المرحلة الثانية التي أضيفت فيها أفكار ومعلومات أخرى قد استجدت من خلال البحث والتنقيب عن مصادر علوم الحياة الحيوانية ومراجعها الكثيرة فاستقينا منها وراء عذباً ونهلنا معيناً ثرّاً رفدنا به النواة الأولى لهذا الكتاب.
ثم جاءت المرحلة الثالثة التي تجردنا فيها للشرح والتعليق والإضافة والرد والنقد لكل ما أورده علماؤنا الأجلاء والأفاضل من أفكار وفرضيات ونقولات حتى لا يقع القارئ ضمن دوامة اللبس والشك والإبهام.
