ليس هناك تعريفٌ واحد متفقٌ عليه لجنس السيرة الذاتية. وعلى الرغم من ذلك، فيندُر أن نجد دراسة واحدة حول هذا الموضوع لا تتطرق-بطريقة أو بأخرى-لمسألة التعريف. لكن الاختلاف بين الباحثين حول ما يميز هذا الجنس الأدبي والخلط الذي ينتج عن تعريفاتهم أحياناً، يجعلان المرء في حيرة من أمره حول ماهية هذا الجنس الأدبي...
لكن الأهمية الكبرى لهذه الدراسة تكمن-في نظرنا-في تأكيدها طبيعة الثبات أو الجمود التي تتصف بها معظم التعريفات المقترحة لفن السيرة الذاتية. فهذه التعريفات تهمل البعد التاريخي الذي قد يكون مسؤولاً عن إنتاج سيرة ذاتية مختلفة في أزمنة متفاوتة. فقد لاحظ الكاتب أنه في كل حالة تُعرف فيها السيرة الذاتية يُفترض عادة أن هذا التعريف صحيح، وأنه ينطبق على كل الكتابات "السير ذاتية" في كل الأزمنة. لذلك نجده يختتم دراسته هذه بضرورة تأكيد الأهمية التاريخية في صياغة أيّ تعريف لهذا الجنس الأدبي.
