لفتت أعمال نجم الدين حسن الرماح أنظار الباحثين الغربيين منذ أواخر القرن الماضي، واحتل كتابه في الفيروسية والمناصب الحربية مكانة هامة بسبب ما ورد فيه عن البارود وعياراته وعن النيران الحربية.

إلا أنها في معظمها لم تتوخ الموضوعية العلمية، وكما إن نشر كتب الهندسة الميكانيكية العربية وترجمة بعضها إلى اللغة الإنكليزية قد وضع المنجزات العربية والإسلامية في موضعها الصحيح في هذا المضمار.
لذلك، فإن نشر المخطوطات الحربية العربية التي تبحث في البارود والمدافع والأسلحة النارية وترجمتها إلى اللغة الإنكليزية سوف يساعد على توضيح الحقائق التاريخية، مما يسدي خدمة كبيرة إلى تاريخ الحضارة بشكل عام وإلى تاريخ العلم والتكنولوجيا بشكل خاص.
ولأهمية هذا الكتاب، اعتنى بتحقيقه الأستاذ الدكتور أحمد الحسن حيث عمل على مراجعة وتصحيح فصول الكتاب، وتدقيق النص، ومراجعة معجم المصطلحات، كما أنه أكمل هوامش ومراجع الكتاب وفهارس، ونظم شكله إتماماً للفائدة.
