يبحث هذا الكتاب في ذكر مدافن السلف الصالحين من العلماء الراسخين وأساطين المدرسين والأدباء والشعراء وخطباء المنابر والملوك والأمراء والوزراء وغيرهم من الشخصيات المعروفة أصحاب النفوذ والخدمات الاجتماعية المذكورين في تاريخ كربلاء الذين دفنوا في هذه البقعة الشريفة المقدسة. وقد رجع المؤلف في هذا الصدد في ما رواه إلى أوثق المصادر والمراجع حرصاً على الحقيقة وعملاً بحرفة التاريخ.
هذا وقد قسم الكتاب إلى ثلاثة فصول، الأول، الأول تعرض فيه لذكر مشاهير المدفونين في الروضة الحسينية من جميع جوانبها ثم عرج على الصحن الحسيني ومقابره القديمة والحديثة ثم الذين دفنوا في الصحن الصغير وذلك حسب حروف المعجم. أما الفصل الثاني فتناول فيه مشاهير المدفونين في الروضة العباسية من جميع جوانبها، ثم عرج على الذين دفنوا في صحن العباس ومقابره. والفصل الثالث يضم مشاهير المدفونين في أطراف المدينة وطرقاتها، والمدفونين في الوادي القديم والجديد.
