تأثرت الإثنية الكردية خلال القرن العشرين بعوامل شتى اجتماعية واقتصادية وسياسية، وصار معظم الكرد أكثر اندماجاً في الدول التي يقطنون فيها، غير أن ذلك لم يضعف الإثنية الكردية قط. بل إن عملية الإندماج هذه عززت الوعي بوجود هوية مشتركة بين الكرد من مختلف المناطق واللهجات والمعتقدات، من دون أن تزيل بالكامل الحدود المميزة بين الجماعات الفرعية وسط الكرد. أما الحركات السياسية فقد أدت دورها في شحذ الحدود الإثنية المميزة للكرد عن الجماعات الإثنية المسيطرة في الدول المذكورة.
غير أن الانقسامات الداخلية لم تختف وسط الكرد، ويبدو أن بعض الحدود الإثنية الداخلية برزت بقوة أكبر خلال العقود الماضية، ويبدو أن تطور وسائل الاتصالات والمواصلات وتزايدها بين الأكراد من مختلف المناطق ومن شتى الجماعات الثقافية الفرعية لم يفض تلقائياً إلى مجانسة الثقافة الكردية. ويبدو أن ثمة زيادة كبرى ليس فقط في وعي الأكراد بكرديتهم، بل أيضاً في وعي الجماعات، الفرعية داخل الكرد، لنفسها كجماعات فرعية، أو للجماعات التي تعقد صلة متناقضة مع الإثنية الكردية.
يتناول هذا الكتيب التباينات والفروق الصغرى داخل القومية الكردية، حيث يتضح للقارئ أن هناك وعياً عند الأكراد بأن مجتمعهم يمثل موزاييكاً تعترف بقوة بذلك، ورغم أن الحدود الفاصلة ق تتغير، لكن المجتمع سيظل على الدوام موزاييكياً.
