في مجموعته القصصية هذه يعكس القاص العراقي "سلمان شهيب" يوميات الحرب العراقية –الإيرانية التي شكلت منعطفاً خطيراً في تاريخ الأمة العربية وفي تاريخ العراق بشكل خاص. وفي هذا العمل نتلمس تأثير الحرب على جميع مفردات الحياة اليومية للفرد العراقي فضلاً عن تأثيرها على البناء الإجتماعي والسياسي والإقتصادي بشكل عام، حيث تتكاثف صور الخراب ومناظر القتل وافتقاد الفرد العراقي لأقرب المقربين إليه عائلته ومنهم الأب والأخ والإبن والزوج والحبيب، وهذا ما عرفه الأدب العراقي بما يسمى أدب المعركة أو أدب الحرب وهو مصطلح أوجده النظام السياسي السابق والذي وسم بطابعه كتابات الأدباء لتلك الفترة من الزمن.
وفي "صرخة ألم" إحدى قصص المجموعة لا يعود الواقع مجرد صورة فوتوغرافية للحدث، بل يغدو أقرب إلى لوحة فنية يقوم الكاتب بتشكيلها مبرزاً علاقات شتى بين ألوانها التي يطغى عليها الخوف، والألم، مآسٍ لا حدود لها. "... الصمت يلعق ظنوني، تنمو غلالة الحزن حولي.. أسير بجوار الحوائط برغبة في الإحتماء... وأدرك أن آلاماً ومآسي لا حدود لها ستأتي مع الأيام.. شرفات البيوت نائمة، وقبرة الفجر الجريحة تعدو خلفي.. اخرج من لحظة عابرة، باهتة الزرقة".. الصرخة في أثري، أعدو فزعاً وثمة خيطاً رفيعاً موشح بالدم والموت والضياء يتبعني...".
يحتوي الكتاب أربعة عشر قصة قصيرة جاءت بعناوين مختلفة نذكر منها: "شبح الفسفور المحترف"، "عمود من حجر"، "لهب ودخان"، "نافذة"، "رموز في الذاكرة"... الخ.
