ولد بيثنتي ألكسندري فـي السادس والعشرين من نيسان/ إبريل 1898 فـي إشبيلية، وقضى السنين الأولى من حياته فـي مالقة الأندلسية التي تركت صورها فـي الكثير من شعره؛ فنرى الرمال، والأمواج، والبحر، والشمس، وهواء الساحل – وكلّها إشارات للجنّة التي ضاعت كما ضاعت البراءة الأولى. درس بيثنتي الحقوق فـي مدريد، وهناك التقى بشعراء جيل 1927، وسرعان ما أصبح أهم الأصوات الشعرية فـي تلك الحركة الطليعية، لكنه كان قَدَراً أن تفرّق الحرب الأهلية الإسبانية أبناء هذا الجيل، ويذهب كلّ شاعر فـي جهة: استشهد فيديركو غارثيا لوركا، وسار كلّ من بيدرو ساليناس، ورافائيل ألبرتي، ولويس ثيرنودا، وخورخه غيينا إلى المنفى الذي امتد أربعين عاماً من حكم فرانكو، ولم يعد منهم إلى وطنه غير رافائيل ألبرتي.
وشكّلَ اعتلال صحة بيثنتي سبباً منعه من الخروج، فظل فـي إسبانيا. نشر بيثنتي ديوانه "قصائد الاكتمال" عام 1968 وهو فـي السبعين من عمره، ونجد فيه النظرة الفلسفية الحميمة إلى الزمن وغرابة الموت. وقصائد الديوان مركزة، وأغلبها قصير، وصورها الأساسية هي الحجر، والبحر، والريح، والنار. الحبّ موجود، لكن العاشق غائب. من هنا يتشابك حضور الذكريات وغيابها فـي القصيدة وكأنها كلمات آتية من وراء القبر. والحقيقة المقنعة الوحيدة فـي نظره تتمثّل فـي الحبّ الحِسّي، فنراه يبوح بالحضور القوي للذكريات على أنها الشاهد الوحيد على حياتنا، خصوصاً ونحن نواجه النهاية المحتومة. وما الفم والشفاه، القبلات والأصوات، غير السٍجِّل الحقيقي للحياة. نال بيثنتي ألكسندري جائزة نوبل عام 1977، وتوفـي فـي مدريد فـي الرابع عشر من كانون الأول/ ديسمبر 1984.
