إن عظة الأمم تقاس بعظمائها وقادتها، وأمة لا عظماء لها ولا قادة لها، لا تاريخ لها. والأمة الإسلامية هي أغنى الأمم وأثراها بعظمائها وقادتها، الذين صنعوا حضارة إسلامية، قامت على الإيمان، والعلم والعمل، والأخلاق، ونشروها في ربوع الدنيا، في وقت كانت تسود فيه الوثنية وتعمه الجاهلية، وتغمره ظلمات القرون الوسطى. والأمة التي تتوخى استمرار وجودها الفاعل والصاعد، وبقاء تكاملها في حاضرها ومستقبلها، لا بد لها من درس الماضي والعودة إلى سيرة قادتها للاستفادة والإفادة منها.
من هذا المنطلق تأتي الدراسة في هذا الكتاب والتي تناول المؤلف فيه دراسة حياة خاتم النبيين محمد صلى الله عليه وسلم القدوة والأسوة الحسنة التي أمر الله باتباعها، وسيرة ىله من بعده، متبعاً ولدراسة حياة الرسول صلى الله عليه وسلم كل إمام من الأئمة وتاريخه على أساس النظرة الكلية المترابطة الحلقات، أي ككل مترابط الأجزاء، فيدرس هذا الكل كاشفاً الملامح العامة والأهداف المشتركة لفهم الدور الذي مارسه الرسول والأئمة من بعده في الحياة الإسلامية العامة.
هذا وإن دراسة حياة الأئمة على أساس الاتجاه الكلي، تكشف عن الخصائص العامة والأدوار المشتركة بالأئمة، يزول معها ما يبدو على اختلاف وتناقض، لأنها تبدو على أساس هذه الدراسة الكلية مجرد تعابير مختلفة عن حقيقة واحدة، وإنما اختلف التعبير عنها وفقاً للظروف التي عاشها كل إمام ومرت بها الرسالة الإسلامية والشيعة، وهذه الظروف تختلف من إمام إلى آخر. لقد قدم المؤلف دراسة عن حياة وسيرة الرسول صلى الله عليه وسلم وعن حياة وسيرة كل إمام من أئمة أهل البيت على حدة في هذا الكتاب وذلك بهدف تذكير هذا الجيل بهؤلاء ليكونوا لهم قدوة يسيرون على خطاها.
