يقول الإمام علي (رضي الله عنه) "إن قوماً عبدوا الله رغبة فتلك عبادة التجار، وإن قوماً عبدوا الله رهبة فتلك عبادة العبيد، وإن قوماً عبدوا الله شكراً فتلك عبادة الأحرار". ولعل هذا القول الذي لا يضاهيه قول في عبادة الله شكره هو ما جعل مؤلف هذا الكتاب "محسن عقيل" وسمه بـ "من يقدر على عبادة الإمام علّ" والذي جعله مرآة لما كانت عليه حياة الإمام علي رضي الله عنه، وتطبيقه مبادىء الإسلام والتماسه الهدف منها والتي محورها (رضا الله، وهدفها عبادته، ومغرداتها العمل الصالح في كل مواقفه رضي الله عنه).
يجمع الكتاب قصصاً حية عاشها الإمام مع إخوان له في الدين محورها التقوى وحيث الناس على الإيمان بالله وملائكته وكتبه ورسله. من هنا يرى المؤلف: أن من لا يفهم "تقوى الإمام" يحتار في تفسير كثير من مواقفه، وأن كثيراً من الخطط الممكنة، والخطوات التي نصحه البعض بها لإحراز الإنتصار كانت في الحقيقة تصطدم بإيمان الإمام رضي الله عنه، والتزامه بالأخلاق، وتعهده للرسالة، وزهده في الحياة الدنيا ... كان الإمام يرى "الصلاة قربان كل تقيّ" و "معراج كل مؤمن" ولذلك فإنه كان يكثر منها ... وكان يعلم أن العبادة ليست مظهراً، إنما قيمتها بمقدار ما تضيء في القلب من نور التقوى وكان يقول: "ليست الصلاة قيامك وقعودك وإنما الصلاة إخلاصك".
وعليه، يضيء هذا الكتاب بـ "خصائص الإمام علي الأخلاقية" ومنها: خلقه، وحلمه، وقوته الإيمانية، وجوده، وتواضعه، وعفوه وصفحه، وصحبته، وزهده، ووصاياه، ومواعظه، وعدله، وقصص من عبادته، وأدعيته وغير ذلك من عبادة الإمام.
