إن لكل فرقة أو مذهب عبر التاريخ، علامات تميِّزه عن غيره، فتكوِّن خصائصه ومزاياه، والشيعة الإمامية، لا تشذ عن هذه القاعدة، ويعتبر بحث العصمة، من حيث شمولية إطلاقه، من تلك الخصائص التي تميز بها الإمامية.
هذا الكتاب إطلالة عقلية على مباحث العصمة وأدلتها عند الشيعة الإمامية الإنثي عشرية، وهي إطلالة عقلية، بإعتبار أن ثمة مجالاً كبيراً وواسعاً للإستدلال على كثير من الجوانب المتصلة بهذا الموضوع من ناحية نقلية: قرآنية وروائية (حديثية).
وهذا يصح على مجال واحد وهو: العصمة قبل البعثة، أما العصمة بعد البعثة، لا بد فيها من الرجوع إلى العقل، ولا مجال للإعتماد فقط على النقل، إذ لا بد من دليل عقلي... يثبت عصمتهم بعد البعثة...
ومع ذلك اجتهد المؤلف في إثبات العصمة قبل البعثة على الدليل العقلي أيضاً، ووفقاً له: "إن الشيعة الإمامية تعتقد أن العصمة لا تقتصر على الأنبياء وحسب بل تشمل الأئمة أيضاً؛ ويعود سبب ذلك، أن الإمامة عندهمن ليست مجرد رتبة زمنية تنحصر مهمتها في الحكومة والسياسة، بل تتعداها لتشمل جميع الوظائف التي أنيطت بالنبوة، بإستثناء تلقي الوحي... والعصمة ليست أمراً جبرياً يفعله الله تعالى في عباده، وإنما هي أمراً إختياري، لكنه نسبي يختلف بين شخص وآخر، كل حسب إستعداده وقابليته، ومرتهن بسلامة الفطرة، وبالسير وفق مقتضاها، وبكمال العقل والعلم...".
توزع الكتاب على بابين وخاتمة، الباب الأول: دراسة للأسس العقيدية لفلسفة العصمة عند الشيعة الإماميةن والباب الثاني: دراسة لمباحث العصمة والموارد التي تشملها العصمة مع الأدلة عليها، وأخيراً خاتمة ورأي.
