في عصر يتسم بتمزق الروابط الاجتماعية والارتياب الشامل إزاء الطبقة السياسية، فإن قضية معنى " العيش المشترك " تفرض نفسها بشكل ملح. العنصرية، والتشنجات الهوياتية، وذكريات الاستعمار لا تزال تواصل التأثير في مجتمعاتنا. كيف نجيب على المطالب الحالية للرؤية الاجتماعية، وإشكالية الاعتراف، وأي مكانة نمنح لهذا الماضي الذي لا يزول؟ للتفكير في " العيش المشترك "، ثمة قضايا أساسية تفرض نفسها : من هو الآخر؟ أي مكانة نترك في مجتمعاتنا للغيرية أو للاختلاف؟ أي تمثيل نبني للغريب، والمهاجر، والانسان المسكون بثقافة أخرى غير ثقافتنا؟ كيف نفكر في العلاقة مع الاَخر الوافد من مستعمراتنا القديمة، والذي - بنظرة عرقية – قد نسيجه في صورة كاريكاتورية تجعل التلاق والوفاق معه أمراً مستحيلاً؟ تكشف مجتمعاتنا المعولمة عن مفارقة : من جهة، تنفتح مجتمعاتنا على التنوع وتتيح في العديد من المدن تشابك الثقافات ( تنوع المطاعم، معارض حول مختلف الثقافات...)، لكن من جهة أخرى، تكشف الثقافات عن تقوقع هوياتي يحصر المواطنين في تمثيلات اختزالية خاطئة عن الغير. إن صورة الانسان العربي أو المسلم تبدو بمثابة سبب جديد لقلقنا، سبب يجذب معه سيلاً من الأحكام المسبقة العنصرية والمعادية للإسلام. يصف إدوارد سعيد الطريقة التي بنى بها العلماء والكُتّاب الغربيين، منذ القرن الثامن عشر، صورة الشرق الأسطوري والغامض، نقيض العقل المستنير لعصر الأنوار، الكفيل بتبرير استعماره. يتيح الاستشراق أن نرى علامات السلطة والسيادة الاوربية والأطلسية على الشرق بدل خطاب صادق عنه. إن التفكيك الذي اجترحه إدوارد سعيد يزيح القناع ويكشف قوة تزييف اللغة الكولونيالية، حيث ترتبط الوشائج بين البلاغة والايديولوجية. يتيح التفكيك الذي اعتمد عليه سعيد أن نلاحظ أن ما حدث مع النزعة الأنسنية الأوربية تم استقباله في المستعمرات في شكل من النفاق وازدواجية اللغة وتشويه للواقع.
