رَجلٌ يُقِيمُ فِي قَلعةٍ مَهجُورة، مَسكُونةٍ بالأَشبَاح مُنذُ قُرون، لتَنفيذِ تَجرِبةِ تَناسُخِ أَروَاحٍ يُمارِسُ فِيها التَّأمُّلَ ليَصِلَ إِلى التَّسامِي الرُّوحِيِّ والانفِصَالِ عَنِ الوَاقِع، ليَتحرَّرَ مِن ذاتِه ويَطرُدَ بالإِرادَةِ الحُرَّةِ رُوحَهُ الحَقيرَةَ ويَستَقبِلَ رُوحًا أُخرَى أَعظَم وأَنبَل. غَيْرَ أنَّ فَأرًا شَيطانِيًّا يَقفُ فِي سَبيلِ ذَلِك، ويُقرِّرُ الرَّجُلُ أنَّ قتْلَ هَذَا الفَأرِ هُو الحَلُّ الوَحيدُ لإِتمَامِ تَجرِبتِه. تُرَى هَل سَينجَح الرَّجُل؟ ومَاذَا سَتكُونُ عَاقِبةُ قَتْلِ الفَأرِ الشِّرِّير؟ هَل سيَصِلُ بَطلُنا إِلى غَايَتِه؟ ومَاذَا سَيكُونُ مُصِيرُه؟
