إن كان الدرس الصوتي قد وضع بذرته الخليل بن أحمد الفراهيدي [ت 170هـ] ثم تعهده سيبويه [ت 180هـ] بالرعاية حتى استوى على سوقه، وآتى أكله، ليقطف ثماره ابن جني [ت 392هـ] ومن جاء بعده، فإن معينه لم ينضب، والبحث فيه لا يزال مثمراً، فعلى الرغم من العناية التي نالتها أصوات العربية من علماء اللغة قديماً وحديثاً، إلا أن هناك بعض القصور في تناول أصوات العربية الفروع التي تنبه إليها سيبويه في كتابه، وظل من جاء بعده من القدماء يردد ما قاله دون تفسير لغامضه، أو جلاء لمبهمه.
من هنا، تناول المؤلف هذا الموضوع، متزوداً بما تلقاه من شيوخ حفظ الرواية وأساتذة فن الدراية، مازجاً بين القديم والحديث، في محاولة جادة لوضع ضوابط دقيقة لأداء أصوات العربية الفروع على النحو الصحيح خدمة للقرآن الكريم ولغته.
