ولدت فكرة تزويد المكتبات العربية والعالمية بمختارات من القصة القصيرة في بلدان مجلس التعاون الخليجي للشعور بفقدانها وانعدامها من رفوف المكتبات، وللشعور بأهمية سد فراغ هذا النقص الثقافي، كخطوة أولى لمشروع نهضوي وثقافي في المجال ذاته، أو حتى في غيره، شرط ان تتبناه مؤسسات ثقافية كبيرة في الدول الست تؤمن بأهمية احتضان الفكرة الجوهرية من المشروع.
تأتي مجموعة "اصواتهم" للقصة القصيرة في البلدان الخليجية الستة، كحلقة أولى من مبادرات فردية ستليها مجموعة أخرى تحمل اسم "اصواتهن" على امل أن يكون في مسعاه من حيث اننا فضلنا أن تكون لكاتبات القصة الاناث مجموعة منفردة، وللكتاب الذكور مجموعتهم كأصوات لها خصوصيتها في التجربة الكتابية، غير معنيين بتميز الابداع لما يحلو للبعض تصنيفه بأدب ذكوري وآخر نسائي.
