هذا كتاب أراد من خلاله الشيخ "تقي الدين الشمني" تقريب المعرفة بعلم مصطلح الحديث للناشئين، فجمع شرحاً مختصراً على نظم والده العلامة كما الدين، طلباً من بعض إخوانه وطلبته، بعد إلحاح شديد منهم، فجاء كتاباً قريباً لطالب العلم المبتدئ والمتوسط، ثم لا يستغني عنه المنتهي والمتبحر، إذ هذا هو المعنى الصحيح للاختصار والإيجاز، والاقتصار على بعض أصول العلم واضحة بينه، حتى إذا أتقنها طالب العلم انتقل إلى كتب أوسع.
هذا وقد جاء الكتاب محققاً، حيث تم الاعتناء أولاً: بعزو الآيات القرآنية إلى مواضعها من القرآن الكريم، ثانياً: اعتنى بتخريج الأحاديث النبوية الشريفة وبعزوها إلى مصادرها مع بيان الحكم عليها. ثالثاًَ: ترجم للأعلام غير المشهورين، من غير تفصيل ممل، رابعاً: ترجم للمصنف والناظم والشارح، خامساً: ذيل الكتاب بمجموعة فهارس علمية، كفهرس الآيات القرآنية، وفهرس أطراف الأحاديث النبوية، وفهرس أنواع العلوم، وفهرس الموضوعات العام.
