اخترع الناس عبر التاريخ أسلحة لحماية أنفسهم من الآخرين، وتنافس إنسان ما قبل التاريخ مع الحيوانات البرِّية على الطعام والأرض، وكانت أسلحة الصيد من أولى الأدوات التي اخترعها البشر، ومن ثمَّ صنعوا أسلحة للحرب.
كان سكَّان ما قبل التاريخ رُحَّلاً، وعددهم قليلاً ومتباعدين؛ لذا كان القتال نادر الحدوث، وعندما يحدث، كانوا يسارعون إلى إستلال فؤوسهم الحجرية ورماحهم وسهامهم، ويشهرونها في وجه بعضهم، ولكن عندما مارس الناس الزراعة وأسَّسوا الحضارات، زاد عدد السكَّان في العالم، وأصبحت المناطق مقسَّمة على نحوٍ أوضح، وأصبحت الموارد نفيسة أكثر؛ لذا بنى الناس البلدات ثم المدن في مواقع يتوافر فيها الطعام والماء، وطوَّروا معدات وتقنيات جديدة.
وعلى حدود تلك الحضارات عاشت مجموعات أخرى أرادت الحصول على تلك المواقع النفيسة، والإستيلاء على أفضل الموارد لمصلحتها الذاتية.
بدأت الحروب على صورة مشاجرات بين العائلات والعشائر، ثم تحاربت القبائل فيما بينها للحصول على الممتلكات، أو لحماية أنفسها، وبسط هيمنتها على الآخرين.
