فى قصص الحرب. علينا أن ننبه القارئ إلى أن يتسلح بالدهشة حتى يمكنه اكتشاف هذا العالم القصصى, وأن ينسى قائمة الأكلشيهات الجاهزة لدى النقاد فى تناول مثل هذه الأعمال, ذلك لأن أعمال (محمد الشريف) تنتسب إلى جيل يختلف عن الكبار.. فالوعى بالشخصية المصرية (المفردة وليست الجماعية) حادة للغاية عنده, لهذا نلمح فى أعماله صراعات الشخصية وتناقضاتها بين المدينة والقرية.. والخيانة والضمير.. والصعود والهبوط.. فهو يحاول فى بعض الأعمال أن يمد الجسور بينه وبين الواقع العام عن طرق السياسة والواقع الاجتماعى المتفجر. وهذا ما يتبين من خلال رواية (الحرب).
