أصل كتاب "قصص الأنبياء" هذا هو الجزء الأول وبداية الجزء الثاني من "البداية والنهاية" للإمام أبي الفداء إسماعيل ابن كثير. وهذا المجتزأ هو مثل بقية الكتاب الأم، يعد افضل ما صنف في بابه، حيث جمع بين القصص والتاريخ والسير، معززة بشواهد من القرآن الكريم، والأحاديث الشريفة، والآثار، والروايات التاريخية، وآراء المفسرين. وبالنظر لما يقدمه هذا الكتاب من مداد فقد اعتنى عبد الرحيم بن حسن الخليفة بتحقيقه وبتخريج ما جاء فيه من آيات كريمة وأحاديث شريفة وآثار وشواهد من مصادرها، كما أوردها المؤلف في كتابه.
كما سعة إلى تذليل ما رآه صعباً من الألفاظ، والعبارات والمعاني، ومصطلح علم الحديث والأعلام، والأماكن، وذلك بالشرح والضبط والتعريف، ووضع كل ذلك في الحاشية مضيفاً بعض التعليقات، ومبيناً فيها ما يتطلب بياناً، وذلك ليعود إليها القارئ في مكانها أنى احتاجها، كل رقم كل الكتاب حسب سياق الكلام والمعنى، وألحق بآخره فهرساً للمصادر والمراجع التي اعتمدها المؤلف.
