وفقاً للعديد ممن كتبوا سيرته، فإنه لُقِّب بالمحاسبي بسبب الإلحاح على تقييم نفسه، لكن بحسب العطّار فقد أطلق عليه الإسم لأنه أي المحاسبي لا يقوم بأي خطوةٍ أو عمل من دون تفكيرٍ مسبق، وربما يشير نسبه العنزي إلى أن أصله عربي بدوي من قبيلة عنزة.
تعرضت تعاليم المحاسبي خلال حياته للإنتقاد من قبل التقليديين، وحتى بعد موته انْتُقِدت كتاباته بوصفها هرطقة، والذين كان من بينهم الحنبلي أبو زُرعة الرازي (المتوفى سنة 264 للهجرة)، وابن الجوزي في بغداد (المتوفى سنة 297 للهجرة)، وعبد الرحيم العراقي (المتوفى سنة 806 للهجرة).
بالرغم من الإنتقادات، بقي تأثير المحاسبي كبيراً، وتم قبول تعاليمه على نحو رسمي ليس من قبل الصوفيين فحسب بل أيضاً الأشعرية والخفيفيين، الذين قبلوا المحاسبي كواحدٍ من بين الشيوخ الخمسة الذين تقبل تعاليمهم وتطبق شرعاً.
كان الغزالي من أكثر الكتّاب الذين تأثروا بالمحاسبي حيث اعتمد في تعاليم كتابه إحياء علوم الدين على مبادئ أكّد عليها المحاسبي، ومن المرجّح أنه من خلال الغزالي كان للمحاسبي أثر في تطور التصوف المسيحي واليهودي في العصور الوسطى.
كان المحاسبي كاتباً ثراً، معطاءً، لكننا لم نعرف له سوى واحد وعشرين عملاً، لم يبق منها سوى سبعة عشر فقط.
من بين هذه الكتب كتاب الرعاية لحقوق الله والقيام بها، ويُسمّى أيضاً كتاب الرعاية في التصوّف، وهو يمثل تحفة المحاسبي وأعظم أعماله، لكونه الأطول والأكثر شمولاً من بين كافة كتاباته.
