وفي هذا السياق يقدم الكتاب تصنيفاً للنظريات الموجودة "من وجهة نظر تأثيراتها" تسمح وجهة النظر هذه، بفتح الجال أمام مقالات مختلفة الأنواع، من مثل تلك المتعلقة بنقّاد الفن، بمؤرخي الفن، بالسيميائيين، بالظاخراتيين، بالمحللين النفسانيين، بالفنانين أنفسهم، الذين ينظرون إلى الفن باعتباره نشاط إجمالي يهدف إلى بناء الحقل، أو تحويله وقولبته، أو قدرته على بناء موضوعه، ولكن، حتى هذه المقدرة بالذات غالباً ما تكون محصلة لمعرفة مسبقة بهذه الأصول والقواعد التي سبق أن بيّنها فلاسفة ومفكرون من أمثال أرسطو وكانط وهيغل وآخرون، وهذا يعني أن المعرفة في كل مجال هي تراكمية حتى في النشاط الفني، وهو ما سوف تُعبر عنه صفحات الكتاب.
