إن المنهج الملائم للدراسات الجمالية أو لعلم الجمال هو المنهج الكيفي القائم على الفهم، ومن ثم أخذنا بعين النقد والتمحيص كل ما قيل عن مسألة المنهج في علم الجمال، فرفضنا المنهج التجريبي لأنه منهج كمي، وقبلنا المنهج الوصفي على أن يكون الوصف هنا فينومينولوجيا، أي يصف الأعماق الدفينة للظاهرة الجمالية. كما قبلنا المنهج المعيارى لأن الجمال قيمة من القيم العليا شأنه في ذلك شأن الحق والخير، وقبلنا المنهج التحليلي بشرط أن يبعد التحليل عنا هو مادى، كما قبلنا المنهج النقدي لأن النقد عمل فكري ووجداني في المحل الأول، وقلنا أخيراً أن المنهج التكاملي الذي يربط بين المناهج السابقة المقبولة لدينا هو منهج جمالي سليم بشرط أن يتضمن ما قلناه عن كل منهج منها بحيث يتوافق المنهج الكيفي في نهاية الأمر.
بالكتاب أيضاً مذاهب، وبه نظريات. أما المذاهب فتدور كلها حول المذاهب الفنية من انطباعية، وتعبيرية، ووحشية، ودادية، وتكعيبية، وسيريالة، ورومانسية، ومستقبلية وغيرها. وهي مذاهب لا غني لدارسى الجمال والفن من إدراكها والإحاطة بها. وأما النظريات فهى تدور حول تفسير عملية الإبداع الفني من ألفها إلى يائها ومن ثم فهى تشمل: نظرية الإلهام، والعبقرية، والنظرية الإجتماعية، والنظرية العقلية، والنظرية السيكولوجية. غير أن الأمر لم يقتصر على عرض هذه النظريات وحسب، إذ تبع ذلك نقد لهذه النظريات ومن ثم تأسيس رؤية جديدة للإبداع الفني.
