هذه الصفحات التي حاولنا في ضوء ما تيسر لنا من قراءة فكر الأمير طلال بن عبد العزيز ومنهجه، لا تمثل كتابة سيرته، أو حتى عرض صياغة لمفتاح شخصيته، فالرجل، وفي ضوء المحاورات التي تمت بيننا، أو المتابعات الأدبية والفكرية التي كنا أحياناً لا نتمكن من اللحاق به لتأملها ودرسها والتعليق عليها، يملك مخزوناً فكرياً خصباً بفعل التجربة وحركة ديناميكية متجددة، لكن أعظم ما يجمعهما: المخزون بالتجربة والحركة المتجددة هو: التطور، والتجدد، والتفاعل مع إيقاع العصر ومتغيراته، والريادة في تجاوز الشكلي والسلبي والفرعي، استبسالاً في التعامل مع الثوابت والأصول. ومن هنا كانت هذه المحاولة في الكتابة عنه.
وإذا جاز أن يصنف الرحل في موكب التاريخ: ثقافة وكفراً وأدباً فهو كما قال عنه نفسه ذات يوم لإحدى الفضائيات، وعلى الهواء مباشرة: "أنا مسلم، سعودي، عربي، قومى ليبرالي". وهذه الصفحات استهدفنا من خلالها وفي إيجاز الوقوف على معالم هذه المقومات في فكر الرجل ومنهجيه. ولذا كانت العناصر والمحتويات الأولى لهذه الدراسة تنطلق-كشفاً-عن المنابع الفكرية التي أسهمت في تكوين شخصيته، مع إبراز أثر الميراث الديني والتاريخي الذي مثله: والده الملك عبد العزيز، وعبر وسائل عديدة بعضها: تحقيقات صحافية أجريت معه، وبعضها الآخر كتابات خطها بقلمه في كتب، أو نشرها في الصحافة العربية التي تصدر في الوطن العربي وخارجه، وبعضها حوارات انفردت بها مع سموه، وكانت في معظمها، كما أشرت إلى ذلك في موضعه، استدراجات مني لسموه حول قضايا "قلقة" في عالمنا العربي والإسلامي، لم تحسم التداعيات الفكرية المترتبة عليها كالتنمية، والتقدم، والمجتمع المدني، ومدى علاقته بالموروث والثوابت من عدمه.
